IMPORTANT: Choosing the Right Hilux Roof Rack
The roof tent is only as secure as the system it's mounted to.
TUFFTREK® does not recommend roof bars that simply grip or clamp around the upper door frame for carrying a roof tent on a Toyota Hilux.
Even where this type of bar may be suitable for lighter everyday loads, a roof tent places significantly greater and more complex loads on the mounting system, particularly when travelling on rough roads.
For a Hilux roof tent mounted over the cab, we recommend a proper load-rated, permanently mounted roof rack system, such as a Front Runner drill-fit roof rack designed specifically for the Toyota Hilux.
Always check the load rating of the vehicle, rack and complete mounting system before fitting a roof tent.
Mounting a Roof Tent Over the Hilux Load Bed
For many Hilux builds, mounting the roof tent over the pickup bed is an even better solution.

Cab or Canopy – Where Should I Put My Hilux Roof Tent?
Both can work extremely well when correctly installed.
Cab mounting keeps the load bed completely open and works well with a properly installed load-rated roof rack.
Canopy mounting creates an integrated touring setup and can make it easier to combine your roof tent with storage, an awning and other overland equipment.
For more heavily equipped Hilux touring builds, a load-bearing canopy is often our preferred solution.
