This is the weight your roof can carry while the vehicle is moving — the figure that matters for driving with a tent fitted. You will find it in your owner's handbook. It is much lower than the static load, which is what the roof holds when you are parked and asleep in the tent. If only one figure is listed, it is almost always the dynamic one. Not sure? Our 1–10 rating for how fast a tent goes from packed to slept-in. Hard-shell tents sit at the top — gas struts pop them open in under a minute. Soft-shells sit lower: more poles, more zips, more time, but a bigger footprint for the money.
